Which are the best German clinics for the treatment of heart diseases? Thirteen excellent hospitals that ensure a high quality of treatment are listed here.

German doctors have considerable expertise when it comes to heart conditions. This is due to the fact that heart diseases such as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), a heart attack or heart failure are amongst the most common causes of death in Germany. Therefore, there is great interest to do research on suitable therapies for a quick recovery.

At present, the biggest challenge in cardiology is the treatment of heart failure, which affects older people in particular. In the past, a heart transplantation was considered the gold standard, today however, it barely plays a role anymore due to the lack of donor hearts. Heart failure is often caused by the disfunction of a heart valve. In all of the clinics mentioned below, the doctors have above-average experience in replacing a heart valve with an artificial heart valve (OPS 5-351).

This is how the clinic list was created:

  • Focus Award! Every year, the big German weekly magazine FOCUS awards the best specialist hospitals for cardiology. All the clinics mentioned in the Clinic List 2021 are listed as top clinic in the field of cardiology.
  • Many patients! At the clinics presented above, the doctors have great experience with the replacement of heart valves with an artificial heart valve (OPS 5-351), because only hospitals that perform this intervention on an above-average basis have been taken into consideration. Hospitals are obliged to inform about their medical treatment in quality reports and to provide this information to the Federal Joint Committee.
  • Certifications! When a clinic receives a certificate, this means that there are doctors working there who specialized in heart medicine and that the necessary equipment for a treatment is available. All of the hospitals listed above are Cardiosurgical Centers certified by the German Society for Thoracic, and Cardiovascular Surgery (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Thorax-, Herz- und Gefäßchirurgie, DGTHG). The DGTHG is the most important specialist society for heart surgery in Germany.
  • Good Hygiene! All of the clinics listed attach above-average value to patient safety. At least 45 out of 55 measures have been taken in order to assure optimal hygiene before, during and after surgery.

This is just a small selection of German clinics. Of course, many other hospitals also offer a high quality of treatment.
